What Is A Fire Damper?
Fire dampers are passive fire protection devices installed in ductwork and ventilation systems to prevent fire and smoke from spreading between different areas of a building. When activated by rising temperatures, these devices automatically seal off air ducts, containing the fire within a designated compartment and protecting lives and property.
How Do Fire Dampers Work?
Fire dampers function using either a fusible link or an electric actuator. When temperatures exceed approximately 72°C, the fusible link melts, causing the damper to close. Motorised fire dampers, integrated with a building’s fire alarm system, can also close automatically upon detecting smoke or heat. This critical mechanism helps contain flames and toxic fumes, ensuring safer evacuation routes and improved fire protection.
